Has anyone ever added armor to a vehicle? Is there a low-cost DIY option, such as ceramic plates or kevlar inserts? I would like to reinforce the doors of a 2005 Chevrolet Avalanche. Thanks.

Some police equipment suppliers offer kits to add armor to limited areas of vehicles. They need to be installed so they don't fall off inside the door and the hinges may need to be made more heavy duty.

Fill the doors with phone books!

You could try bulldogdirect. They sell kits and panels.

For an every day driver? Likely folks aren't going to shoot at door panels, they'll be hitting windows. If you're doing this to your EDD, expect gas mileage to far outweigh the benefit of having armored door panels. Unless you're a security contractor, or plan on robbing a bank and want to make damn sure you get away, seems like overkill.

Dude, dont waste your time with that. The phone book thing is problematic since most phone books are small and thinner then they were 10 years ago. Besides, if your avalanche is anything like my BIL's, it already gets pissy gas mileage. You armor it and you'll end up getting 3 gallons to the mile.

Do you, or anyone else, know who owns or runs this company?

Just roll around in full kit. Sure, more wear an tear on your body, but cheaper than modifying your car
