Marvel fans prepare to cringe... Fox looking to bring 'The Punisher' to television
Prime time might want to brace itself for another Castle.
Fox is aiming to make a TV series featuring Marvel comic book character The Punisher. The procedural drama would center on New York City detective Frank Castle, who seeks justice on the side as a merciless vigilante named The Punisher.
The project — which has been given a pilot commitment with a penalty if it doesn’t air – is being exec produced by Ed Benero (Third Watch, Criminal Minds), who is also developing a sci-fi western titled The Eye at ABC...

And a "sci-fi western"?!?!?!? What a
NOVEL idea!
(No power in the 'verse will make forget
or forgive, FOX!)
So in TV world the Punisher has a dual identity nice. Why not just follw the friggin story rather than make shit up.
Wonder how much "punishing" will be delivered at Prime time?

I was actually thinking the other day that The Punisher would work out great as a TV series but it would need to be done on HBO or some network like FX.
I predict.....FAIL.
Probably the biggest disappointment was BOTH Punisher movie attempts.

Punisher in film
I also predict massive fail, unless it makes it to FX...then it might have a chance.

Heh. I remember Marvel hyping the first movie every month –– then in a little blurb in the back of the comic, in response to a letter "Hey, where's the movie?" was Ed's response: "It's so great we're taking it straight to video!"
:-/
See?
THAT'S how much fail the Punisher movies have been! I forgot there were
THREE!!

The only hope for this being any good is FX or a subscription network.

Disney owns Marvel now... it's likely ABC or not at all.
Won't see the light of day add this to the long list of canceled FOX shows.
If I were a producer making a show, Fox would be one company Id avoid doing business with.
The reason I enjoyed the Punisher Comic books was due to the cool guns (Punisher Armory was great) and frankly, because Frank Castle was over-the-top brutal. I mean Punisher was basically just a continuous blood bath and there was nothing comical or cute about it. He didn't have a love interest and he didn't have a comic relief.
Where they go wrong in the films is that they try to give Punisher friends or a love interest. Punisher is a lone wolf driven by a singular motive and that's to Punish.

Yep, Punisher Armory were the best. Punisher did have Microchip for a good long time in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I think he would qualify as a friend to Punisher.
My favorite punisher comics were the Nam' comics from the 90's. That would make a great movie.
Some cool comic enemies, too. I'd like to see a decent movie with Bushwhacker in it with his gun arm.

WHY?

Heck, The Punisher started out as a "cool villain" himself.
(I still have a pristine copy of that issue, BTW.
Amazing Spider-Man #129 IIRC.)

He didn't have too many recurring enemies that I recall. I still have all the comics I got as a kid. I haven't bought any new issues in about 20 years.
ETA* He didn't have too many recurring original Punisher comic enemies like Jigsaw and Bushwhacher.
The
Wikipedia Punisher Page lists some other comic book heroes as recurring enemies.

You, Sir, are correct. Worth a small fortune now.
The armory issues are what got me into guns.

I'm betting he was asking "WHY?" to the whole idea of a Punisher network TV series.
The Punisher, with the right script and director could be epic,,

The 89 movie with Dolph was pretty close to being good. Shitty acting killed it.

Of course it could... but
very unlikely for broadcast TV.
A "pay cable" series or mini-series with the right production crew could be great, though, no argument there.

Think AMC would have a decent go at it?
Call me cautiously optimistic. I liked the Terminator tv show fairly well, didn't love it but thought it was a whole lot better than T3 and TS. Budget and ratings restraints for a network show would certainly cut down on the action, but would allow for better exploration of Frank Castle's thought processes, as well as building up the actions of his antagonists. It would be very hard to do without giving him friends/sidekicks/love interests, though. A show where a total loner is the main character would be a tough sell.

Since they will be diverging from the comics and have him maintain a dual identity (still a cop while also The Punisher), I suspect his friends, etc. will be centered around the cop identity and not The Punisher (unless they have an "assistant"
a la Microchip).
Don't get me wrong from my comments above. I
WANT this to work and I
WANT it to be good... I'm just not counting on it working out that way.

Waaaaaay back when I was still reading them I saw, (might still have), the coolest cover of Captain America. I think Frank Miller did it. It had the Punisher standing on Cap's shield, pointing a gun at Cap.

I had a 'What If' issue...what if the Venom parasite took over the Punisher instead of Spider-man. Damn, I'm gonna have to go to storage and dig them all out. HAHA
These network fuckers better keep their mits off of Mack Bolan and the rest of the Stony Man crew.
will butcher the all time best comic
just make him a vietnam vet liek he is meant to be

Going to be tough to film it then, because it would have to be a period piece. Unless you're proposing Frank be 60 or so.

That's what always pissed me off about the movies. No one has a clue to his past. A buddy of mine would always tell me he was a former cop, even though he never read the comics like I did.

Dolph Lundgren as the Punisher and one of the worst movies filmed for Hollywood in Australia.

he is in his 60s in the comic and it works out just fine
thats part if the fun. he is older, but still a hardass and mean, with a lot of abuse of his body behind him, it shows how driven adn insane he has become over the years
if its on fox fuck them, they will cancel after 2 shows. fox kills anything worth watching leaves junk on. dont think a tv show would do it justice unless its animated or cgi
You can't have a "legit" Punisher.. when he's owned by Disney.. just kills it..
