WTK: Saving/Copying DVD movies to computer hard drive?
How do I save my DVD movies to my computer's hard drive? Do I need to buy a program or does my computer already have the capability (Windows 7)? How much disk space does an average DVD movie take up? What format do they end up in (AVI?, MP4?)
for windows:
Buy Anydvd and then buy a DVD riping program.
For Linux, it's all free.
Size on hard drive depends on what resolution and whether it is compressed or not.
An uncompressed DVD at full resolution will be about 8 Gigs.
Just to be clear we are talking about fair use backups that are legal.
Mach,
You are correct. I am only talking about copying DVD's I own to hard disk so that I can watch them on other types of devices and conveniently travel with them on my netbook, which has no CD/DVD drive.
Will the combination of AnyDVD and CloneDVD do what I want?.
If you're wanting to watch them on a smaller screen, compressing them into .avi or .divx (around 700Mb) would make more sense.... the higher definition isn't needed on say a 10.1 inch netbook
I started converting my DVD collection some time ago and moved the compressed .avi files onto an external... got about 150/700 done when the hard drive (Maxtor) gave out.... here endeth the lesson
Eggs / Baskets etc

Yes, I used to use those when I used windows.
ETA. If you put a ubuntu partition on, you can clone DVDs without buying anything.
ETA2: nevermind, I had to manually install some codecs, so if you or someone you know doesn't know linux, forget it.
I use DVDFab HD Decrypter. It's part of a trialware package. The rest of the stuff stops working after 30 days, but the DVD ripper is good forever. I've never needed AnyDVD, although it's also an excellent program.
I use DVDShrink to create ISO image files. You can also create an image file of the main movie and leave out all the extra crap. You can also further compress the file if you want. I save the ISOs so that I can burn new DVDs of my kid's movies. When they end up destroying the DVD, I just reburn it.
To create MP4 files, I use Handbrake (also free). I stream the files to my Apple TV.
When I get AVI files, I use VideoLAN to play them (free).
I use AnyDVD to remove protection and to rip to hard drive, then I use DivX to compress into an AVI. Works great.
I use DVD43 to decrypt and Handbrake to encode the files. Both are freeware.

How are you turning out .avi files with DivX... ? Just ask because since my last update, all the output files are in .divx format....
My DivX encoded stand alone DVD player won't even recognise them

have to stream them wireless from the PC?

Working good so far, I save them on my NAS and stream through my Xbox 360. This is a new way of doing things for me, but I'm almost positive they are saving as avi...I'll double check though.
