2001 Triton 5.4L, how many miles is too much???
So I have been in the market for a new truck lately and I am really liking the 2001-04 F150 SuperCrews. I REALLY want a crew cab 4x4 and they are the only ones that are in my price range.
My father in law has had 4 of them and the one he currently owns has 143,000 miles on it and still runs strong. He even owned a 02 with 171,000 miles and had no problem driving it 6+ hours on the highway at the drop of a dime.
Now, my current truck is a 98 Chevy 1/2 ton 2WD with 135,000 miles. I would not hesitate to drive it California and back if I had to.
I found a 01 SuperCrew in Kansas City that looks to be in EXCELLENT shape. White exterior, tan leather interior, sunroof, sliding rear window, bed cover, rhino liner, new wheels/tires, and just recently had the plugs/coils,upper/lower intake manifold replaced at a Ford Dealership.
Only problem, it has 204,000 miles on it. For the price he is asking it is well below NADA, even with the miles, but that is the thing that bothers me.
So those of you who have the 5.4L, would you trust buying one with over 200,000 miles on it?
My 2000 Expedition just lost it's transmission with 135,000 miles. The 5.4 engine was fine but I am looking at $5800 in repairs (transmission, radiator, trans cooler, new hoses) etc. The book value on the truck is worth about $4000 so obviously we are not fixing ours.
I think 200,000 miles without any history is too much of a risk. I have also been looking for a replacement in the form of a supercrew or short bed with either a supercab or crew cab. Timing just sucks as I need to go in for major surgery soon so I guess I will look to buy late in summer now. These trucks hold their value pretty good however even with higher miliage.
Well this truck is out of the question.
I was wondering how long he owned the truck so I called him back. He tells me that he has had the truck for a little over a year and put about 48,000 miles on it. Then he proceeds to tell me that he bought the truck with a little over 200 on it.
Yeah, the truck doesn't have 204,000 miles, it has 248,000 miles on it and he is the 7th owner!!!!!!
I am really glad I didn't drive 6 hours to look as this truck, because that would have been an ass-kickable offense.
Luckily I just got off the phone with my father in law and he wants to sell his truck he has now, it's more than I wanted to spend (8300) but I know this truck is in good shape and would last me well past the 200,000 mile mark.
I had an 03' F150 SuperCrew and the 5.4 is a damn fine engine. You would have no problem getting 300,000 out of it, that being said you have to watch out for the overdrive and tow switch in those year models. Mine went out 2 weeks after I bought it and it's comon and it's $1200. Also they had an issue Full Recall with fires on that model as mine almost took my house down with it during it's inferno stage. Got the recall on it three weeks later......
Great trucks though just get a dealer to run an OASIS report on it before you buy any used FORD.
ETA: They hold great value, hell I gave $10K for mine and got $16K out of the insurance. Took that and got my F250.........
I've got 244K-something on the original engine, transmission and rear axle in a '97 F-250.
My 2004 F-150 with the 5.4 3V has 139K relatively trouble free miles, although I think the '97 is built better.
I'd buy one without thinking twice about it regardless of the mileage, *mainly* because I can fix them myself, so I don't really care about miles. It's just parts and time for me. For anyone else, without having some good maintenance records on hand, think twice and have the truck thoroughly inspected before buying.
There is no way in hell I'd buy a truck with 200k unless it was $1000 or less.
