Ok. So I have a 2002 Toyota 4 Runner that needs some work. I went shooting a few weeks ago and got down a hill fine but had to get towed back up, as I couldnt get traction. So for my own little AAR, I have decided to put some cash into truck, and get some brush guards, skid plate, and a winch. Basically I am hoping to be able to self recover if I have to. I have never done this before though and am hoping to get some input. Any tips or ideas?

4Runners are great "as is". But with a "slightly bigger" tire and 1" or 2" bigger wheel as well as what your describe it sounds GTGo, go to the 4Runners forum. I've had 3, all were still great @150k+miles.

Neither will the supercharger. I'd get an ARB air-locker for the rear, a modest suspension lift, and 33"ish mud terrain tires. I'm not sure what the most vulnerable spots are underneath, but one of the Toyota forums should be able to point you in the right direction armor-wise. IMHO, most brush guards are a waste of money, but something hardcore like an ARB bumper would give you good protection and a spot to mount a decent winch like a Warn M8000.

Brush guard is more for the winters. Lots of Priuses sliding around here

Heading over to the 4runner forums, but whats the air locker do? Kinda a car noob. Currently I have slightly oversized all terrain/weather tires. Thinking about a small lift, but its also my daily driver and Im not sure if I wanna kill my gas mileage like that.

I'm assuming this is a 4x4 4runner being in colorado? If not, just sell it and get a 4x4.

Otherwise:
Detroit trutrac in the rear, BFG mud terrains in slightly larger size should get you pretty much anywhere within reason. The ARB bumper and warn winch are also good additions. Lots of other bumper styles available too, just hunt around for them.

Suspension lifts and larger tires will require regearing the axles if you want to keep your power, and at high altitude you need all the power you can get

You might want to check to see if your 4runner already has a rear locker. A lot of 4runners came with them stock. If you have one, you'll have a button to the left of the steering column that says "RR DIFF LOCK"

With an open differential, if one wheel loses traction (spins), the other wheel on that axle receives no power and stays still. It allows the wheels to turn at different speeds for cornering, but not good for traction. A selectable locker gives you an open differential most of the time, and a button you can push that locks the axle so that both wheels receive equal power.

Electronic lockers were offered on certain packages in certain years of the 4runner, or you can use an aftermarket ARB model..
