School me on subwoofers
It's been many many years since I've messed with car audio and I convinced the wife unit to allow me a single 10" sub. I only want a little more thump, not stupid loud and hard bass.
I'm looking to keep it pretty cheap though.
I'm looking at a single 10" Polk DXi or Diamond Audio sub. I'm not sure what amp I need but I will get to that.
Here is my question. Do I need a single voice coil (SVC) or a Dual voice coil (DVC) and do I want a 4ohm etc etc.
I was planning on running a single 2 channel amp or a mono amp for the sub then adding a 4 channel for the fronts and rears.

I buy and sell a TON of CA on the car audio forums and have been into it since I was 15...can't get away from it either. I'm in my early 30s and have 4000 watts going to 2 15s" and even that's mild to some people now'a days.
Let's start off with what vehicle you have and what type of music do you listen to? We'll go from there. I'll point you in all the right directions...
To begin with, you can get a LOT more for your money if you go with an "underground" company. Sundown Audio and DC audio just to name a couple. I currently run DC subs and love them! I have been through 20 different sub setups in the last 2 years...literally.
How much power do you want to run? The voice coil configuration is predicated on what amp you intend to run and the for efficiency, always go DVC for more wiring options. Your notions of amps setup is correct. You want to run a mono amp for the sub, and then run a 4 channel to the highs and mids.
I'll tell you what you should do, this way you're happy the first time around.

Right on. It's going in my 2011 Camaro SS. I'm not against going with any specific brand really, I just wanted something of good quality.
I really listen to all kinds of music. Country, rap, 90's rock, oldies etc etc I don't listen to pop or other teeny bopper stuff.
I'm not looking to win any SPL contests or be heard from a block away. I just want a good tight bass with clean mids and highs.
Camaros have great acoustics and you can get them very loud, very easy. But since you just want something to sound good, you won't need much power.
Ported, sealed, 4th orders...there's a ton of ways you can install a sub. Are you going to build the box yourself? A sealed box is probably what you going to want to build. I"m a ported guy myself, but a sealed box will give you moreover a tight "sound quality" type of sound. Ported boxes are the most efficient and can get you louder, but once again, you just want it to sound good.
For your car I would just do a 500 watt RMS sub in a sealed box and a 500-1000 watt amp. Go with a DVC 2 ohm sub and an amp that does the power at 1 ohm. Wire the sub in parallel and you will have the amp running to it's potential. You shouldn't need any additional batteries at this power level either.
Fire the sub upward towards the hatch glass; the sub will be most efficient and sound the best. 1 cuft. is all you will need for a sealed 10" sub. I can help you with dimensions for the box too if you want to IM me...
I can also get you some great deals on some really good equipment. I have friends that are reps for a number of companies and also build custom subs. If you give me a budget of how much you want to spend on everything, I can make your money go the furthest...

Damn you Ford boys! I'm not a Ford hater. I had a dozen Fox body Mustangs and miss them. My buddy just bought an '11 Shelby GT500. Sweet ride
I prefer the sound of well engineered sealed subs.
I'm not going to claim sealed is better, just that it is much more pleasing to my ears. I do find that sufficient power and a bit of bass EQ is required to get flat response down to 20HZ.
With that in mind, I build my own conformal enclosures out of fiberglass, I make them thick, highly braced and strong. In the past some amps had bass EQ settings that would properly compensate for the sealed enclosure "roll off" . Not sure about today's offerings, but I suspect they are still available.
I recently did a stereo install on my 08 Tundra. I havent done one for about 15 yrs, since I was in high school. I went with a JL Audio Stealthbox. I see they make one for your camaro. The price is pretty high for them, but I feel the fit and finish it worth. It has a OEM/Custom appearence and the box is tuned for the sub already loaded in it.
This is great timing for this thread.
I've got a 2012 Ford Raptor which I love, but the OEM sound system is lacking. I replaced the OEM speakers with Polk DXI's which helped somewhat, but now I'm really lacking bass. I'm 36 years old and I'm not looking to be heard outside the truck, I just want something which will sound outstanding inside the truck. I plan on adding a 4 x 45w Alpine amp to power the four Polk 5x7's, but I need to come up with a stealthy way to add some quality bass. I've decided to get a custom box built for one 10" sub that will go under the rear seat. I selected a class D Alpine MRX-M50 mono amp for the sub (mounted behind the rear seat), and after a lot of research I had the shop order a JL Audio 10W3v3:

I definitely value sound quality over loudness/boominess. Besides talk radio (getting old I guess), I listen to mostly rock (Shinedown, G n' R, AC/DC, Metallica) and some country. I figured I might as well spend a little more on the sub to make sure I get the sound I'm looking for. I get the whole system installed on 6/15. I thought about doing it myself, but the shop's labor is only $160 for the whole job (installing both amps and the sub/box); they've been in business for a long time and have a great rep. I'll post a range report once I get everything installed.

Not to sidetrack, but.................
Do you have a pic of your setup? I remember hanging out at a car audio shop when I was teenager and drooling over the systems they had. One of the employees had us sit in his truck (4 door Blazer) and listen to his (2) 15's. It was insane. I remember seeing him coming from a LONG ways away in a shopping plaza one time and I could feel the thump even from that far away.
My last car had a single 12" in a sealed box with a plexi-glass back/sides. It wasn't immensely loud, but it had a nice solid thump to it.

"Best" I ever heard belonged to a Phoenix Suns player (Richard Dumas). He had a Suns Purple Jeep Cherokee. No back seat. IIRC, there were 6 or 8 15's in the back. You didn't hear it so much as it pounded you into submission. It was ridiculous.
I was just looking him up to see what happened to him. He's in jail in OK for something or other.
Something funny did come up though. He got arrested over the stereo system in question.
