I've got a friend who's gotten an itch to buy a classic euro car. I've been combing through for sale ads across the internet trying to help him look for something. He's looking for a late 60's early 70's Porsche 911 or BMW E9. Neither one of us is particularly well versed in these types of cars. One of the cars he's interested is currently listed on eBay. Can anyone provide some insight as to whether or not this is a solid looking car? The description is quite detailed and as as far as I can tell the only thing that looks "off" to me is the bit about the idle being set too high.

He's also eyeballed this BMW -

Any suggestions as to what to look for on these cars?
The oldest 911 I ever owned was a 1988 that I was the second owner of and it was pristine. The old 70's era Porsche's had bad body pan rust issues. I'd make sure it wasn't rusted out underneath. Old BMW's I know nothing about. I have a 07 Z4 and he can get a less classic BMW that is many years newer for what they are asking for that one.
No doubt about that, but he likes what he likes. I sent him a few links to newer M3's as well. He currently drives a Range Rover Sport Supercharged and an 07 BMW 335i. He had an Audi R8 not that long ago as well.
I've been trying to talk him into a Mustang for about 2 years now and he wont hear any of it :) He basically wants something fun to drive that has some sort of collectible value to it. He's also been talking restoring whatever he gets.

Helluva car, that 3.0! One of the great ones.
I own a Porsche, I love Porsches, I race Porsche. Please do not let your friend buy a classic Porsche. BMW is the correct answer here.

Thats weird cause the first thing I thought when I read BMW E9 was, wow this guy must really know his classic beemers, since most everyone else shopping from that time period goes straight for a tii.
Have you asked him why he wants that particular model? The 2002 was the iconic BMW at that time which kinda jump started the next step in their progression which I guess was the E9 and the Inline 6 banger.
If he is not familiar with the 2002 tii you should tell him to check them out, they are very very cool.

I've gotta go ahead and ask, why not get a classic Porsche? Is it the maintenance aspect of it?

He's a very particular sort of person. I've not mentioned the 2002's to him (I am familiar with those) just because it doesn't have the same type of lines that an E9 does. The 2002 is a good looking car, but the E9 seems to have a more exotic/elegant look about it. I'm guessing that's what he's shooting for.
Looking at late 90's Porsche Targa's now.
Either would be a nice vehicle. I have a 88 Targa now that I love. The E9 is slick though. If I was going to go with a classic BMW, that would be it.
