Help me pick an SUV
Hey guys I don't know a lot about SUV's but I was thinking about buying one for my next vehicle. My car hit the 100K mark and it's about time for something new. My dad also bought a ranch recently so I was thinking it would be nice to have something i could use out there with higher clearance and 4 wheel drive. Also if i could toss a bike in the back that would be nice since I'm an active guy. I also like the idea of getting one those Truck Vaults for it to store some weapons and gear in. I want something that can also be used for work, I work private security, so I am going to get it in black and try to make it look intimading. I would like to spend around $25K for it or so. Obviously something with decent gas milage and good reliability is a plus. What do you guys think I should get? Thanks

Toyota Highlander. V6 and AWD
If you want more off road prowess there is the 4 runner.
If you want something smaller and more fuel efficient than the highlander there is the Mazda CX-5 or Toyota RAV4.(get the 6, fuel economy is similar to the 4 cylinder)
Another alternative to all the above is a subaru forester.
Cool I'll check out the Toyota's thanks. Any other suggestions guys?

Yes, Trailblazers.
Avoid them like the plague infected whore in a high traffic Navy town.
define "decent gas milage"
define "higher clearance"
Get a 05' Ford Excursion with a Power Stroke.
I guess decent gas mileage for an SUV would be about 20 miles per gallon. As far as clearance goes, well I've seen some SUV's that are as low as my car, and I need something that can go off-road a little bit. I'm not doing anything too crazy of course, but just to get around the ranch without getting stuck. My dad's F150 with 4 wheel drive is able to get around just fine out there, but my little car would get stuck for sure.

Saturn VUE V6 AWD. 2004 and on. Honda V6 in it for decent gas mileage.
Otherwise, H3 Alpha.

06 and on have 17 inch wheels. You can also swap for factory 16 inch wheels and put BF Goodrich All Terrains on it too. You will have to buy used, but you can save a shit ton of money that way. Made in TN too.

As far as the offroad part, hit up youtube for vids of saturns pulling Chevy Silverado's out of the mud.

Jeeps, Explorers, Pathfinders, and similar sized vehicles are about as good as you're gonna get then.

All the SUV's I listed would be able to handle that. And the rav4, mazda CX-5 and forester will all exceed 20mpg.

You couldn't have picked two vehicles I hate more.
Go with a 4runner, xterra, Tahoe, or something else body on frame. Anything else is really just a crossover and a waste in my opinion.
Good gas mileage is not really an option with a real SUV, but that's not really the point of it. Something that's safe, roomy, practical, with the ground clearance and has towing abililty like an SUV will sacrifice on some things, like mileage, and ease to park (compared to smaller vehicles).

I don't think a Jeep will fit that bill. My 03 Jeep TJ got about 15-16 on the highway (no problems, ran like a top), as did 2 friends of mine. That is the what those 4.0L I6's get. Both my 2012 JK's average around 17-19 MPG and both have the 3.6L V6's with a mix of highway and city driving. They wheel great, have good ground clearance and all, but like I tell everyone thinking of a Jeep. If you are looking for or need good gas mileage, a Jeep is probably not the best choice.
