Married filing jointly or separate?
The ex and I separated in October and the divorce was final on Jan 25, 2012. So, as of Dec 31, 2011 we were still legally married. My income was about $45k, her's was likely close to $30k for the last three months of 2011. We have no children and did not own a house. Am I better off filing a joint return or separate?
Why not do it both ways and see which one results in lower taxes?
I'm going to talk to the ex this week about that and see if she will cooperate. In the meantime, I was just hoping for some insight.
Are you sure that IRS offers the option to file jointly for a year during which you divorced?
The divorce wasn't final until this year.
