Just got word that my NG unit is going to have alot of guys pulled to go to qatar to suppliment a another unit going to do security
My plt sgt told me that qatar is supposed to be the vacation spot for troops who get leave who dont go to the us.
Is qatar still on the combat zone list? For combat pay?
Anyone else been to qatar?

Been there a couple of times. We were tax free but nothing else. I'm AF though and might be a little different for you. The facilities are pretty nice, and you'll probably be in dorms. In the wintertime the weather is good, but in the summertime the humidity is epic. It is the "Vacation" spot in theater, so your time there will be cake.

That's supposed to be one of the "undisclosed locations in southwest asia." ... but then again many don't practice opsec anymore with regards to the locations of these types of bases.

I've been there several times as an aircraft mechanic. They have air-conditioned trailers, anywhere from 2-4 people per room. Also have some tent barracks for transients. Decent place really. Swimming pool, ice cream, coffee, and beer. It's all good until the customs holds up the shipment of beer and smokes.

Yes, you're in the AOR for HF/HDP. You're within missile range of Iran.

If you are going to be at Camp As Sayliyah, its quite pleasant.

Nice pool, Chilis, several bars, bowling ally, good DFAC, etc...

Al Udeid is a little more messed up, but still not bad. Qatar is a pretty decent place to stay, other than hotter than hell in the summer.

WTF are you talking about? Its well known and commented on by senior DoD civilian and military personnel that we're in Qatar and have been for quite some time. Hell we have a big ass damn pool there at AAS with the 3rd Army's Almost There patch at the bottom. There's a Chili's for Christ sake and you can drink beer...

If he's doing the Deid then he'll have 2 pools to choose from, indoor or outdoor. So many choices!!!!!!!!!!! I wish I was there now. I'm tired of waking up to explosions.

Sounds like you'll be there with my neighbor. He'll be leaving out soon for the PDSS.

I was at CAS last year and worked the LE Desk/BDOC. Security used to be contracted to DynCorp but they lost funding and they turned it over to the Gaurd. We just did MP duties. Alot of theft as R&R guys roll through every couple days, vehicle accidents, and D&D stuff at the bars.

When My aircraft flew out of there in 06/07 it wasnt too bad, nights at the bra and the margaritas were awesome when it was 100 degrees outside. The Died has a decent theatre and Pools, and when I lef tthe dorms were being opened up but I never lived in them. its a cake walk compared to up in the mountains of Helmand Province.

I left Al Udeid AFB after setting up a new contract operation there in December 2011, so my experience is pretty recent. I am still in AOR, as I move around a bit between the bases over here and I have employees at most of the locations.

If you care to ask me anything in PM, I am answer your questions there. I have a team in Qatar currently, so if I don't know the answer, I can shoot them a call to find out anything else you might have a question about.

As someone said earlier. The humidity is epic. I live in Florida and Qatar is hell in comparison when it comes to heat and humidity. 110F plus in the summer and humid as hell. Sucked a$$. haha.

What's it like there in the future? Do they ever get rid of the stupid reflective belt policy?

Been there twice for a month a piece but these was in 94' diving on the northern end, tent set up 25m from the beach and last in 99' driving our DMV's across the whole country several times a day. Downtown was great and so were the resturants.

Why the fuck are you worried about Hazardous Duty and Hostile Fire pay when you will be lounging in a pool? The only combat you will see is two guys fighting over a beer at the bar. You are not going on a combat deployment so settle the fuck down and stop worrying about getting the same extra money that some of us are actually earning.

Just heard that they are no longer a R&R spot. Powers to be are shutting it down do to no troops going there anymore (no more troops in Iraq and too far from Astan).

Just got back from Al'Udeid (passed through it on my way to and from Afghanistan). Not bad, and we never had bad lines to get our beers - maybe 10 minutes tops. Then again, we had nothing to do but hang out and kill time waiting on flights. The food at UID is great, especially compared to Kabul - although their love for the chicken sandwiches is a little odd. I had no complaints, but my standards were pretty low by the time I got there.
