6 weeks till pitchers and catchers report, 8 weeks till spring training so we're over the offseason hump. Baseball cant come back soon enough as far as Im concerned.

The StLouis Cardinals have signed Matt Holliday to a seven year deal.

Randy Johnson called it a day and retired. It's been an honor and a pleasure watching him pitch throughout his career, and here's to a well earned retirement and a future spot in Cooperstown.

Meanwhile, Atlanta traded Vasquez to the Yanks, signed/announced Troy Glaus at first base today, and they say they're still kinda shopping around for a utility/do-all guy. Billy Wagner is closing, and he looked really, really good in the few appearances he made with the Red Sox last year. If Glaus can put together a 20-something homer/80-100 RBI season, Chipper snaps out of his funk from last year, and the rotation holds together, the NL East is ours.

Glaus is a good player if hes healthy, I was actually a little sad to see him go. Hes not great but hes a solid performer, and IIRC in '08 he led the NL in doubles.

I hadnt heard Randy Johnson retired...he's a shoe in for first year ballot hall of fame.

(And speaking of which, the HOF inductees are supposed to be announced tomorrow.)

I liked Glaus when he was with the Angels. Which reminds me, I think the Angels are fucked this year, but I could be wrong. The FO scares me

Did anyone else watch Mark McGwire cry on TV?

In 1998 I was 13 years old, the Cards were always (and always will be) my favorite team and Big Mac #25 was my hero.

Its sad to see your boyhood hero come crashing down in flames like that.

What disappointed me the most though about Mac is what he says with regards to his steroid use. Using them to bounce back from injury (okay, maybe), and that he'd still mash baseballs into the next county without them (I don't think so, Mac).

Don't blame the Yankees....blame the ownership of the other teams that don't care enough about their fans to spend the coin on the talent in order to win championships.

They can start by spending some of the FREE money they get as a result of the Yankees paying a luxury tax for having a high payroll.

twonami  [Team Member]

what was the payroll of the Yankees before free agency?
Cause they sure won a shit load of WS then

I don't really have a problem with the Yankees spending ridiculous amounts of money.

I'd imagine if every other ball club out there could do the same, they would. The ultimate objective of any MLB team owner is to win.

Not just that, but those Yankees put fans in the seats. ALL the seats. When they visit other clubs take a look at the seating,
It's a given that there are more seats sold in stadiums when the Yanks visit.
The stadiums that sell out (Fenway) will always sell out. But when the yanks visit other teams, they sell seats.

I don't know why she thinks so but I think they will eat shit this year b/c their FO failed to keep around a couple of decent players and havent worked to get any new good ones. sure, they just got izturis which is cool but look at what they did last year with gmj. and they rented matsui. wtf??

In a surprise move (at least to me), Colorado has signed Jason Giambi to a one year, $1.75mm deal.

Colorado Rockies 2010 25 Man Roster will probably look like this:

Pitching:

Starters-

1. Ubaldo Jimenez R - 100 mph, 5 pitches, potential to be great, one of MLB's workhorses.
2. Jeff Francis L - Underwent surgery, but excellent command with lower velocity. 17 game winner in 07'.
3. Aaron Cook R - Sinkerballer who has a track record that reads 3.75 - 4.75 ERA, but always gives you a chance to win.
4. Jorge De La Rosa L - Headcase who came into his own last year. Which DLR will Colorado see this year?
5. Jason Hammel R - Devastating curveball, mid 90's fastball, doesn't pitch to well at Coors Field. Frequently pitches himself into jams, but somehow escapes. sometimes. This is the guy that gets two quick outs, then loads the bases to get to the #3 or #4 hitter, pitches him into a full count, then strikes him out on a wicked curveball. Or, gives up a bases clearing double. Oh, this is in the 3rd inning too.

Relief-

6. Huston Street R - Closer
7. Rafael Betancourt R - Set up Man
8. Franklin Morales L - Middle Relief/Set up Man
9. Manuel Corpas R - Middle Relief/Set up Man
10. Randy Flores ? L - Middle Relief
11. Matt Daley ? R - Middle Relief/Long Relief
12. Matt Belisle ? R - Middle Relief/Long Relief
****Taylor Bucholz will most likely return to the bullpen in 2010 (Underwent surgery last year)

Position Players
13. 1B Todd Helton L/L
14. 2B Clint Barmes R/R
15. SS Troy Tulowitzki R/R
16. 3B Ian Stewart L/R
17. LF Carlos Gonzales L/L
18. CF Dexter Fowler S/R
19. RF Brad Hawpe L/L
20. C Chris Iannetta R/R

Bench
21. 1B/PH Jason Giambi L/L
22. 2B/OF Eric Young Jr S/R Most likely to be at AAA, although we'll see after spring training
23. OF Seth Smith L/L
24. OF Ryan Spilborghs R/R
25. C Miguel Olivo R/R

As much of a Yankees fan that I am; I think the Yanks and Phillies will be in the WS again this year, but the Phillies will win.

Already got tickets for the Astros v Braves on May 1st!!! Stub Hub rocks... for baseball only, everything else they are very proud of their tix.

Hoping the Braves' pitching staff can come up with a good closer this year and for God sake... lets get some bats going. Its Bobby Cox' last season, lets make it one worth going and put us in the big show.

10 days until Spring training!

I watched the Superbowl today, it was the first time Id watched a football game in probably 7 or 8 years. It was a good reminder that baseball is inherently superior in every single possible way to football.

Like a true fan I expect them to win every year, likewise, like a true fan if they don't I'll blame it on pitching, not spending enough money on the team or passing up certain free agents!

191.13 million dollars = 2010 New York Yankee Payroll.

SPEND MUCH??? And this is actually down quite significantly from the previous two years. I guess you CAN put a price tag on a World Series Championship,
Quintin  [Team Member]

If any other team in the majors had that kind of money to spend, do you think they wouldn't?

I personally don't care what any team spends. If they've got it, then they oughta spend it, because the ultimate goal of any team is to win. Period.
