Trying to watch World Cup of rugby but having a hard time figuring out how the officials determine who keeps the ball etc. Brutal game after two heads collided and no helmets!

< Former Hooker.

Its a more free flowing game than football. Posession changes when one team wrenches the ball from the hands of the other team (obvious), or when a penalty is called. Usually the most confusing call is the "knock on". Unlike football, in rugby the ball can only be thrown backwards (like a lateral). If the ball is thrown or even dropped forwards, a penalty is called against the dropping team. This may not happen right away as the ref usually plays the "advantage" rule. Does this make sense?

Sort of. Now that I have more info I will watch it a little closer when the ref decides to award the ball to the other team. The All Blacks are awesome. Tongo also has some BIG guys out there. I think that I was watching New Zealand and Canada. Not a great matchup but One player from each side cracked heads and it was nasty. South Africa isn't bad either. Thanks Oh, even the wife got into it.

I'm enjoying watching the world cup... it is bringing back fond memories of broken bones and horrendous hangovers.
