what I don't get is why didn't they try the 32.5, but just jumped back to the 35..

It's lame, and I expect it to be changed.
The NFL might not like injuries, but kickoff returns are fan favorites even if they are a high risk play.
With kickoffs at the 35, they may as well just skip the kickoff and give the other team the ball at the 20.

I watched Robbie Gould of the Bears kick two into the stands the other night. I am betting that it was done on purpose to show contempt for the new rule :)
