Most Dangerous Team Sport - the one you are most likely to get fvcked-up playing...?

This is not a 'what is your fave sport' poll.
Which one would you avoid having to play based on the likelihood of breaking your leg or your neck etc etc...
Competitive cheer-leading (very fvcking dangerous) is excluding based on the technicality that it is not considered a sport.

We had a great God team back in college. We would go around smiting and turning people to salt, until Jenkins got hurt that is. He was the center of our line and we never recovered.

Broom Ball is quite injury prone. Not widely played though. Basically you play hockey on ice wearing tennis shoes and usually no pads or helmets. You hit a 8" diameter ball that is usually frozen with a thin layer of chilled water with a cut down broom that has been dipped in rubber.

Nope, I played it is college, caught a broomstick to the mouth once that drove my bottom lip through my top teeth. Lots of blood on the ice. And I don't even want to think about being goalie and blocking a 90 mph ball with my body.

Baseball! Hello, that Atlanta coach just lost an eye! Also, people get hit with that ball and it fucks their career up, as well as their mind!

I would say rugby.

I'm originally from South Africa where rugby is the national sport. There was this player named Joakim "Joggie" Jansen and he was the rugby equivalent of Jack Lambert.

Except Jansen did not wear any pads. But that did not stop him from running into pile ups at full speed. The man was crazy and wherever he played guys were carried out of the game on a stretcher.

I remember one time Jansen made this big hit and from the top of the grandstand, the impact sounded like a pistol shot. The poor guy who was tackled was completely out.

Then there was the time when South Africa played the New Zealand All Blacks and Jansen gave New Zealand's Chris Laidlaw a deep brain concussion.

Rugby is a non stop game of constant violence. And if you are not in great shape, you are going to get hurt.

All of those sports have the chance for serious injury.

From that list I'd say Aussie rules or rugby.

Haven't players snapped their necks due to collapsed scrummages?
Think I read somewhere that there was / is talk of removing the scrummage from some rugby leagues, because it is the most dangerous 'play' in a rugby game.

Rugby is one tough sport that's for sure, those guys are always knocking the crap out of each other. Of course I play ice hockey and to me it's the most challenging sport I ever played which is why i love it. Usually the pads are good about saving our asses from pain, but not always. One time a teammate fell on the ice and another guy tried to jump over him, which is common, but he landed on my teammates arm and missed the pads and cut his arm right open with the razor sharp ice skate. There was blood all over the ice, quite a sight. My teammate had to get a lot of stitches. Granted this was a fluke, hardly ever hear of this happening. But hey racing around on ice with sharp blades wielding sticks and slinging a hard puck around isn't very safe, ha.

I remember seeing footage of what looked like a pro ice hockey game and a player somehow got his neck / throat cut really bad.
It looked real but may have been a really well made hoax?

No, it's happened before. A few people have gotten their carotid arteries cut by skates.

I think it was in the 90s that a NHL player had his carotid arteries cut in a freak accident. Even weirder there was a nationally well known surgeon with some subspeciality in repairing arteries or something odd who just happened to be watching the game. He realized what was happening and rushed out on the ice and saved the hockey player.

The guys I knew in college who played rugby seemed like they were always getting concussions. I did stupid stuff like full contact karate back then but I passed on rugby.

So in your humble opinion, full contact karate is safer than playing rugby?
You must be really good at karate.

hehehe
good one

Seriously, though.......
My brother split his head open playing Hurling when he was about 17 back in Dublin, Rep of Ireland.
Wasn't an uncommon injury for the sport in general.
Needed about 12 stitches as I remember.
As of Jan 2010, they now have to wear protective headgear at all levels.

On the subject of protective headgear, why do only some Rugby players wear that weird headgear?
I assume it's for protection, but it doesn't look very protective to me.

Serious injuries or even death can happen in almost any sport. The age of those involved will make a big difference in this question as well. Are you talking about kids growing up, teens, or adults? However, on average which sport garners the most serious injuries is your question, right?

I'd probably guess the most dangerous team sport though is something like rugby/Australian Rules Football or maybe. I've been playing hockey for almost 20 years, and I haven't seen too many serious injuries. Usually the pads take care of it. Obviously there have been very serious injuries in the NHL, minor leagues, junior leagues, college, and lower, but they certainly don't happen with too great of frequency.

Whoever mentioned baseball as being dangerous, its nothing on the same level as other sports. If someone gets seriously injured in baseball, its most often times a freak play resulting in a freak injury.

Surely lacrosse is more dangerous than baseball. Indoor lacrosse, oh yeah!

Baseball. I've never been more sore or in pain after playing baseball than any sport. I can play basketball or football for hours and hours and hours, but a couple hours of baseball and I'm feeling it. Hard.
