I'm having a problem with some
motels' WiFi set ups; I can receive mail but not send it. I'm using Forte Agent as my email program, and the accounts are smtp providers; mail.ar15.com and another similar. I can access gmail no problem, but I hate the format.
In the past I'd gotten around the email problem with my air-card, but I recently bagged that account because I was no longer using it enough to justify the expense.
Any suggestions? I won't be able to try them out until next week sometime, but if there's something I can fix at home, I'd like to be prepared.
Most likely they are blocking port 25 used for connecting to external smtp servers. You will either have to find a server that lets you connect on a different port, or learn to love gmail. Someone else may have another suggestion though ....
this is a common issue. does your email provider give you "remote" email settings? or do you have webmail access to your email account. the easiest way is to use your webmail to send emails
Any other way will alter your email settings then when you go home you won't be able to send there
What type of cell phone do you use? I have had luck modifying many smartphones to make them a wifi hotspot through which you can connect a laptop. The modification typically bypasses the cell carriers restriction on a feature that the phones hardware is actually capable of. Most newer android and iphones should br capable of this. I use programs called PDAnet and FoxFi. TT
