I'm an internet tech idiot, but I will advise you to use the free version of Avast.

I got virus after virus for years using paid stuff, and then some of the guys here told me to do the Avast thing, and I haven't had an issue since.

Actually, also get Malwarebytes, and CCleaner, and Spybot Search and Destroy just to run occasionally or if you have a problem as well.

I see virus/malware infected computers come into my repair shop on a weekly basis. These computers have every brand of AV you can think of. No AV is 100%, but some are alot better than others.

I use Kaspersy AV on my own computer.

Kaspersky is excellent, however, like someone else said, no reason to pay for it. Microsoft Security Essentials is all I use and my friends/family have not had any problems. THis is also assuming you are keeping your Adobe Flash, Java, Firefox/Chrome all up to date. Patch, patch, patch.

Exactly this.

Have used nothing but MSE for going on 3 years. No purchase, no malware, no problem!

Same here, I backed mine up with Malwarebytes Pro for $15 (lifetime license) and so far nothing has gotten by my castle walls...
