11 year old with a laptop?
So I am thinking about getting my 11 year old a laptop for her birthday. Just one of the basic mini's so she can use some of the math tutor programs, games etc. She likes going on the Disney website on mine and other stuff.
Can anyone one recommend some decent software to lock down the internet and keep her from being tainted at least until she is 13?
She goggled "naked sex" on mine the other day.
God knows what we find with Google.
YouTube is another one I don't like. Their suggestions in the right pane are downright NOT kid friendly. Well, at least with what you guys make me go look at!
Are there any filters on YouTube or would it be an all or nothing deal?
The kid'll be smarter than you and figure out bypasses.
If it were me, I'd put the machine in the living room with monitor facing the family. And it can only be used when you're home and awake. And absolutely no webcam.

This. Get a desktop and hardwire it, no wireless. Set access restrictions on your router so it will only access the internet in the evenings when you are there.
I figured as much.
I figured out how to pick the key lock on the cable box to watch the playboy channel at my dad's when I was ten so I don't doubt that.
That is a GREAT suggestion though.
The flip side is giving some trust to her and see how she deals with it. Obviously I will check what she does, I would have an admin account, etc.
I was looking at this one software called
K9
It logs internet activity which is a plus. I am not the Ogre dad like the one that shoots his daughters laptop because of a facebook message, but I want to have open discussions and be the teacher, not let the internet do it for me unsupervised.

Another good idea. I have a spare lcd monitor I could set up, but I would have to get the desktop.
Why no wireless?

That's the hook for her - trust is earned over time. She behaves, things can be relaxed. She doesn't, things can be tightened up.

Hard to lug a wired desktop to her bedroom at 2 AM to look at stuff she shouldn't be looking at.

Excellent idea and on this I'm NOT kididng.
Newegg has....
Lenovo ThinkCentre M58 desktop (box, keyboard, mouse) with Win7 32-bit for $259
K9 web protection works well and it is free.
Just remember, everything you open it up to allow, increases the risk of getting around the protections provided.
Nothing is foolproof.
Covenant Eyes has a really nice filter and/or an "accountability" software. Basically the accountability software sends you an email with a log of every single webpage visited. It's not a hidden app, they know it's there, but it keeps them honest. I really prefer the filter though and it seems to work really well.
I've heard alot of people swear by K9 too.
Just to update, we picked up a basic laptop yesterday, I installed K9, it works pretty well. I am a bit disappointed that it installs for all users. I would prefer to have it run just when she logs in. I do like that it will block internet use by time frames, in case she decides in the middle of the night to research odd ball stuff. I still would like a hidden logger that will email us activity reports. It's important to me that I give her some freedom but make sure that I know what her curiosities are.
I still can't believe you can buy a laptop for under 300 bucks.

You can buy a laptop cheap, but you do get what you pay for. For an 11 yo you did good IMHO, but if you need a laptop of quality you need to spend a few hundred more, they usually start at around 800 bucks.
Yeah, I have an IBM for myself, SSD, 8g ram, yada yada.
For her it will be more than enough for now.
