 problem with windows explorer

I uploaded some pics off my camera to my "pictures" file. When I tried to look at them I got the "windows explorer has experienced a problem" message.
I can open windows explorer and browse folders with in the pictures folder using the left hand window. But if I click on the folder itself on the left I get the message.
I've done some looking on line and the solutions are confusing.
I don't get the error with any other folder..just the pictures one.
Any suggestions?

My first guess is that Explorer's attempt to read the pics and show thumbnails to you is causing problems. JPEGs should cause no problems, but raw files usually need a CODEC of some sort.

Try resetting your "folder types": From explorer's menu, /tools/folder options/view/reset folders.

I agree, likely a malformed picture that explorer's preview thing is not failing gracefully with.

okay. Did that and I'm not getting the error message now but it's freezing when I open the picture folder.

Did you turn off thumbnails?

Switch over to details instead & see if that works.

Okay. I reset the folder types to details for all folders and I can browse that folder. it's a video I shot that is screwing up..I can open the pics no problem.
Now..the problem is..I can't move or delete the damn thing!

go to folder option->views->always show icon, never thumbnails.

For the icon to show, would it pull a frame from the video causing an issue?

This implies the permissions on the files are the problem.

So, the thumbs.db file (which helps windows display the thumbnails) is in read only mode, and crashes explorer. Then, you can't move the files because they are in read only mode.

In the properties of the folder above, find the permissions tab and "take ownership" and push the changes to all the files, then find the "read only" box in the same window but different tab, and make sure "read only" is blanked.

I changed it from read only and it still froze when I tried to delete the vid. So I copied the folder to my second hd, deleted the original one, created it again and moved all the pictures to it. I then deleted the second folder with the video in it.
Thanks again for you help folks.
