Old tower with extra HDDs - network storage device?

I have an old tower or two and a bunch of extra smaller (<1TB each) HDD's laying around.

I want to turn the tower into a basic network storage device holding a bunch of the HDDs.

I'm willing to wipe any and all OS's off the unit(s) and start fresh, but I'm not savvy enough to know where to start.

What's the recommendation on how to turn this old tower into something I can use to back up some of my files?
What OS should I use?

Bottom line: I don't want to fork out a lot of extra cash if I have the tools available to use what I have on hand!

Thanks!

Haven't used it myself, but it sounds like a decent solution.

FreeNAS I've been using it for 2 years or so

A basic Debian install would be my first choice. Freenas is worth a try too, depending on your hardware - I played with Freenas 7 a while back and it worked pretty good, but reading their site it appears Freenas 8 needs a lot of ram.
