I replaced my xp machine recently b/c it was slower than molassas. So I set it up for my kids. I "repaired" the xp installaion (not a complete wipe of the hard drive) and reinstalled all the updates. Then I went through and uninstalled all unnecessary programs, ran spyware programs, cleaned the registry, etc...

So now it seems to hit its peak on cpu performance now and then and I think the big drain on it is Norton security suite. Can I just that off. I just downloaded microsoft security essentials and I have spybot installed on the machine. Will those two protect the machine sufficiently? (its connected to the net via my password protected wireless network)

I'd personally still run an antivirus...I like Avast, it's free, and is nice to your memory.

I've been running it for 5 years now, not a single virus.

I've seen a bunch of computers used mostly by children that have them completely jacked up with spongebob and miley cirus "games" on them.....seems like those games always add a million toolbars to your browser....pita.

You are good to go with Security Essentials. There is no need to run a redundant anti-virus program.

as long as your uninstalled norton and left just mse and spybot you will be fine.

if you are using Teatimer with spybot you will want to disable that.. its a horrible memory hog

Yeah, Teatimer is a PITA, i tried it on a computer once and finally turned the future off after a few weeks.
