Wipe then clean install
My knowledge is varied and incomplete. long story short
Had laptop with Windows vista. Started playing around, ended up dual booting with Ubuntu. 150 gigs for windows 50 for linux.
Using grub boot loader. It crashed. Ended up with a hacktivated version of windows 7. No more linux.
I got a gift card to best buy for my b-day so i got a lowly copy of 7 home.
I need ti wipe my current drive, reclaim my 50 gigs from linux and install my legal copy.
delete all the partitions with windows setup and let windows automatically dice up the drive.
when installing 7 it will give you the option to delete existing partions. Just read your prompts and you will find it. Worse case scenario if you don't you "should" be able to use disk management to regain the other partition as well.
well, personally, I would leave the 50 gb alone, or even repartion to have the os in a 60 gb partioin and then storage in a seperate partion.
that way if you have to reinstall, you don't lose data.
Also, make sure you have all your drivers you'll need to reinstall.
Use your live CD for Linux to use GParted and repartition the drive. Wipe it all out and start clean. Make a new 50G partition for your Linux OS, make a 4G Partition for your Linux swap, and install Windows on the remainder of the drive. After installing Windows make sure to run GParted again and manage your flags on the Linux partition and set it to boot. Then install the Linux OS.
If your Linux OS doesn't have GParted burn Puppy to disk and use it.
I am no expert but I have set up many machines like this and it works like a champ. (except I usually make my Linux partition only 40G.
