Something that will take a DSLR with a grip, 2 lenses, some medical gear, water and a spare sweatshirt. Maybe a load support system. Hydration sleeve would be nice. Suggestions?

Check out the lowepro photo sport. I don't know if it will accept a body with a grip, but it looks to be a good hiking/photography pack.

I use a Lowepro Fastpack 250. It has a hip belt, but no sternum strap. It will hold many lenses and a camera with battery grip. It also has a computer pocket for up to a 17" computer. I use that pocket for my monopod when hiking. It also has a large top "shelf" pocket to hold extra shirts, or your lunch and a mesh side pocket that will hold a coulpe water bottles.

Looking back I should have got the 350 as it is larger and would fit my frame better (I'm 6'4"). It also has the sternum strap.

I think he needs a bag that will hold more then just photo gear. They have this style of bag:

I have a smaller Tamrac Expedition that I like, but it only holds the camera and camera gear. No other pockets. Since I just got my first dSLR (bag previously used with a fixed lens Kodak), and carry a laptop, I'm going to look into getting a Tamrac Evolution 8 series pack. Not too cheap, but it's got a slot for the laptop, and a top pocket for other things.

All helpful suggestions. I'm very concerned about two things, 1) storing water ABOVE camera gear, and 2) a decent support system. I don't intend to take too much gear...maybe the gripped 5D2 with one lens mounted and possibly a second...but I'll need room for some basic medical gear, a stuffable jacket and personal items (phone, wallet, possibly a small firearm...)

Maybe I would be better off with a camera insert for a regular pack? The Fastpack 250 looks nice, and with laptop storage, it would be a pretty decent all-around bag too, I just don't like the idea of storing water on top of gear...

I have an older Tamrac pack and while the support is spongy as heck, it's really just a terrible backpack and I rarely actually wear it while traveling.

Thanks for all of the suggestions.

This one looks pretty damn nice. Tough khaki canvas bag, thick padded straps, sternum strap, but no waist strap.

Found a video review on it. Has some little fold out 'sacks' on the side that you can use for a water bottle or for a tripod mount. It has molle like loops on the sides, and includes a couple velcro straps to strap on a tripod or monopod. There are also loops at the top of each shoulderstrap that are adjustable, so you could carry a bipod horizontally, too.

Amazon Linkypoo

ETA: I went ahead and ordered one. At $73, it's not a bad deal at all. I found two video reviews and watched them, and I like what the bag offers. I'm not extremely hot on the khaki color. The Amazon page shows some pictures of the same bag in black, but it cannot be found anywhere.
