What Id like to get though in addition to it is a little nicer setup with more optical zoom for scenery/person shots.
What should I be looking at and why? Id prefer it be somewhat compact vs a full blown DSLR setup or something of that nature.
Current megazooms kind of suck and you want something smaller than a dslr so that leads us to mirrorless cameras.
The problem with those cameras is that there are many competing proprietary formats in that segment of the market, with their own positives and negatives.
Also they aren't exactly cheap and certain lenses can be more expensive that similar spec dslr lenses due to limited production and an almost nonexistent used lens market.
So while you could buy something like a Sony NEX-5N with a 55-210mm lens, it may not be the best choice in the long term.
So I would suggest a smaller dslr like a Nikon D3100 or Canon T2i.
A nikon D3100 with the 55-200mm lens should do what you want.
Or a t2i with a 55-250mm lens.
Bot would be quite a bit better than a typical megazoom like the canon sx40 hs.
