Fast Shutter......w/ Guns...

I'm just wondering if anyone has tried taking pictures of guns firing @ 1/1600-1/2000 or faster and what was the outcome.

Just wondering if you could capture the projectile and if so what it would look like.

You need much faster to catch the projectile IIRC. I've shot some 1/8000 from my 85 1.8 and all you see is a trail of the projectile. Like a smoky laser.

Shooting 8.5 fps and your bound to get a few eventually.

Smoky laser is a very good description. I've gotten this down to a 250th of a second with proper lighting conditions.

Are you using sound-activated triggers or are you trying to push the button ?? I have had good experiences years ago, but haven't tried it out recently ??

My setup was a tripod mounted Minolta Maxuum 700si 35mm camera with a sound-activated trigger and a flash capable of multi-pops.. This flash can do multiple flashes around the 8-12 KHZ range as soon as the mirror lifts away from the shutter. So it is flashing as fast as your shutter, but because it is flashing so much.. the range of the flash isn't far-throwing (think about 3-5 feet). Thus, you can get really nice photos as soon as the gun goes off.

It will also help if you put a contrasting background behind the gun, so you can spot the bullet easier when it leaves the barrel..

So if you got the camera shutter set at 1/1000 and the flash set at 1/4000. That single frame will have four bullets, since it flashed four times..

I have had good luck catching the wad from a shotgun barrel, but never the projectile itself.

Ever seen a picture of someone holding a spent bullet that didn't get mangled up - just has the rifling imprints? They look like that.

Yes, you start seeing them around 1/1600 but faster is better. I did the calculations once and at 1/4000 a 45 traveling at 900fps goes like 2.6" in that elapsed time.

I have caught a bunch of 9 and 45 in streaked flight as well, but my server is down.

Sorry for the delay. I have been busy doing the wiring for my photography studio build.

Sweet! If you have the time, I know I'd enjoy seeing what you're doing.

When it is complete, it will feature 3 work stations for my employees, network file server, Cat 6 wired throughout the building, IP based security cameras, Changing room for clients, and areas designated for product photography and portraits. Shots will output directly from the camera to 50” flat panel TVs so that clients can see instantaneous results as the photo shoot progresses.

Best I've gotten... actually me shooting and a friend grabbing the camera.





Nikon D40 with Nikkor 35mm 1:1.8G DX lens, 1/500sec, f2.8, iso200. Sun was at 7 o'clock in reference to the camera, so I think the line is it being reflected off the ball.

Want to get out on a nice bright day with the .45 and see what I can do with big fat slow bullets instead of little zippy 9s.
