Here is the thing, I have no SLR experience whatsoever, only point n shoots. Is there any reason to talk me out of this camera and into something else in the line? I'm not planning on being all pro status I just want a good camera to take nice pictures when I go to interesting places. I have experience with Canon point and shoots and have been happy with them all (menus, battery life, ergo, etc).

I was thinking about a Canon 5D MkII to get something with a full frame, but for the cost difference, I don't know that I will ever see the benefit of those extra dollars in anything I take a picture of.

What do you wish your current point and shoot could do that this camera can?

Are your photography skills exceeding the abilities of said point and shoot?

Hint: Good photography is not because of the camera.

Good photography is simply that. A skilled photographer can create art with a 10,000 dollar camera, or a $5 disposable.

I'm not trying to talk you out of upgrading. That being said, if you believe that a better camera will instantly translate into better pictures, that's not remotely true.

If you plan to buy this camera and just leave it on auto mode, it truly is no better than a point and shoot.

If you want to learn what the manual controls do, and how they work, and how they give you flexibility in your picture taking, then by all means go for it.

A good DSLR will enable you to do more than a point and shoot. Nobody would disagree with that.

But you've got to put the work in to make it happen.

Unfortunately in your case I can't really comment on your camera choices as I don't know much about the canon line of products.
