Went to turn on my PS3 this morning to play some skyrim before work and it kicked on and kicked right back off.
when I turn it on the light is red..when I put my finger on the power swtich thingy it goes green yellow red then yellow real fast then shuts down and goes back to a red blinking standby light.

Im so pissed.. I had just started getting my skyrim character kickin ass and there is no way i see myself getting another PS3 and doing the storyline al over again.

at least i'll still have my BF3 stats

and to top it all off the F#$#@% thing still has my skyrim disk in it.....

so, is there anything i can do to get my skyrim data off the machine and the disk out or am i just screwed and i should go ahead and shoot at it..disk and all ?

never really thought of hitting up a pawn shop...I found a few repair places so i'll stop by them tomorrow and then hot a few pawn shops if that doesnt work.
worse case, I have to shell out some cash for a new or used one to play BF3 and start a new round of skyrim...although its depressing thinking of going through all that again to get to where i was

The HDD in the PS3 shOuld still be good. So your Skyrim save should be fine.

I just had YLOD too, but I switched my old hdd with the new, and the slim would not read it, so, I dont know how to get my 41 Skyrim and countless hours of Gran Tourismo cars back

If you didn't back up before the ylod your pretty well screwed, putting your old hd in any other ps3 will require formatting it. YLOD is usually a cheap fix though.

Take it apart and heat the CPU and gpu. I seriously used a hair dryer but I did apply new thermal paste. This gave me a few more months out of it. In that time I bought a new system and transferred my files, you can do it between two systems but of course it needs to be running. I would still get a new system because more times than not the ylod fix only lasts for a little bit.

had my fiancee drop it off at a local PS3 repair shop and they gave me a call and said they
would want $50 if it just needed cleaning and $150 to fix the blue-ray drive...
I told them not to touch it and id be up monday to pick it up.
everywhere els i checked said its around $80 to fix a YLOD probem and at $150 im at a used in great condition PS3 pricerange.
Getting my skyrim data was important but not that much..i'll play it all over again before i pay that much for them to get it to run for a few more months

That sucks, places around here advertise $30-50 to fix it. My launch had the BD/DVD drive die, ended up buying a new slim system while I waited for new board to come for my old one so now I have 2 ps3's, I use the slim now though since its so much quieter. Not bad though 2 PS3's over like 6 or 7 years vs 5 360's

Fixed my PS3. Discs wouldn't play anymore after stupid ass bug plagued Fallout 3 crashed one day for the thousandth time.
If I remember correctly it cost about $75 and I had it back within one week.

you could open it up, take everything out of it except the mobo/cpu and throw that sucker in the oven and bake it for a few minutes.

And I don't mean turn it on 450 and bake it till it melts.

The point is to put heat on it, a lot of heat, but not enough to destroy it.

I don't remember how long you're supposed to do it for, need to google it.

It isn't a perm fix, but it works.

So basically, you strip it entirely down to the motherboard. You put the motherboard in the oven, bake it for 9~10 minutes, let it cool for 20 minutes, and then put new thermal paste on it and put it back together.

Now, not all YLOD fixes require reflowing the processors. Some are powersupply problems that simply require a power supply. How do you know? You don't. You either get another PSU from a working PS3 and test it, or you don't.

Hope that helps, even if it's only to get data off :).

Here's a really good tutorials on how to do this with a heat gun, which is better than using the oven. Both work though =P.

Also, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MZRReDIHTe0&feature=channel_page

I'd do the clamp bending with my first reflow. Don't need to reflux the first time, but the clamp bending will help.

Hope this helps you! I personally don't have a heat gun so I have to use the oven =P.

Reflowing + Clamp bending will get it up and running for a while. A few months, around 6~ or so if done properly.

Reflowing is not an end all solution. It's just the only way you can fix it at home that I know of. But hey, it works :).
