Some Paleo advice please.
How many of go full bore paleo vs trying to go half and half? I've only just started the primer so go easy with me if I'm asking questions that will be covered.
It's very important when starting out to go 100% paleo IMO. Once you do it for 30 days or so then you can start trying some of the grey area foods like dairy. I've known some people who half ass it and they were very "meh" about the whole thing...that's because they were still getting gluten and sugar every day, albeit just in smaller amounts. You'll probably be surprised just how much those two substances effect you...but you'll never know it unless you go without for a while.
Cut it all, then "black box" things to see how it makes you feel. You may find some things like dairy or rice doesn't bother you for example...but the only way to know for sure is to cut everything out at first.
Go 100%, I doubt you will regret it.

I'm so used to the Abs diet way of eating that eliminating grains is going to murder me. Dairy isnt the killer but whole wheat bread/brown rice and tortillas are. I guess I can just pickup some gluten free bread and or pasta and see how it rolls.

Out of everything gluten and refined sugar are probably the most important ones to cut- the ones that will really make you realize the difference.
I thought it was going to be hard too, but I got over the bread and pasta craving pretty quickly. Now when I eat either I get bloated and feel like there's a brick in my gut...the next day is usually pretty rough. I didn't really realize until I cut it all out that it was causing me mild digestive irritation pretty much all the time.
Helped me trim down a lot too.

I'll just have to find gluten free replacements for all my favorites.

Not all gluten free is grain free. I think that a lot of the health benefits from Paleo/Primal come not just from cutting out wheat and sugar, but from ditching the empty calories of grain-based foods for nutrient-dense vegetables.

Yeah, I'm going to have to ease into it. I think tightening down the current diet and my portion sizes plus my increased exercise and I'll give that 30 days.

Exactly. While I'm convinced gluten is unhealthy, eating a bunch of gluten free bread, pizza, cookies etc is not going to do much good. Save that stuff for after the strict 30 days and use them as treats.

Just remember that you're not going to get many of the benefits of the paleo/primal diet by doing it this way.
Nutella french toast is paleo right?

Like I said, I've only just started the primer and I'm sure I will hit a point that will cement in my brain that total transition.
Next day I have a treat I'm definitely getting some french toast...

Ok, just finished the primer and I'm set. I'm jumping in headfirst.

I went from 202 lbs, 21% body fat to 174, 8% and almost have a sixpack eating 100% paleo. Since Jan 2nd. Just go for it. Eat a shitload of bacon, grass-fed steak and spinach. It's not hard.

I'm enjoying it so far. Can anyone comment on how close texture wise the colliflower rice is to normal rice?

I noticed that as well. When I first started working out in high school, I was "chubby" and did my first cut. I followed a very low fat, high protein, high carb diet. Lots of chicken, egg whites, veggies, potatoes and yams. I had decent results, but I was grumpy a lot and lacked energy. Looking back on it now, I truly believe it was due to the large amounts of carbs I was eating.
Now that I've tried paleo (albiet modified somewhat since I do use cheese in some meals) I have seen faster gains and have had more energy compared to the high protein/carb diet. The cravings for carbs were gone by about day 3 for me.

I am still having a little cheese (maybe 2 or 3oz a week) but Ive had no issues cutting wheat out at all. I really just want a sweet potato but I'm going to give it the 30 days. I have been experimenting with some foods that I usually eat and just substituting. Sushi is my next test, I plan on picking up some cauliflower rice this weekend and rolling up some spicy tuna rolls. I attempted to make tortillas tonight but the batter was off trying to use ground up coconut flakes instead of flour. I really dont have that much weight to lose, my abs are probably 30-40% visible, I'd imagine that a 2-3% drop in BF will be significant. I really just need to tighten my diet for long term health. Last week I read a cardiologist recommendation for post heart attack patients and no wheat was one of his major suggestions.

I make it with onion and garlic. Was hoping for a sushi replacement, but its more like a risotto imo.

Sushi and chipotle restaurants are my 2 weak spots. Before I started my latest cut, I was a carb hound. Always have been, anytime I went to eat, had to have chip, fries, bread, etc along with the meal.
Now that I'm about 3 months in to my latest cut, The cravings are gone. I really think the fats in the paleo help to satiate the cravings. Salted almonds, cheese, avocado and other stuff high in fat (for me) have all but made the carb cravings disappear.
That being said, I do an all out "cheat meal" every 1-2 weeks. I will have rice/bread/chips, etc with that meal and now that I've been on my plan, after the meal and even the next day, I have no desire to have that food again. I basically just use the cheat meal to keep my body guessing and change up my diet so I don't get burnt out.

Some sushi places use that crab filling when you order rolls without rice, it's pretty good...on the other hand, I only have sushi about once a month and unless I'm being super strict I go ahead and have the rice...

Sashimi is perfectly acceptable, to me at least. The gf prefers rolls. A little bit of white rice won't hurt much in any case. Something to think about if you're trying to avoid wheat/gluten is that wheat is the 2nd or 3rd largest ingredient in most soy sauces. I think kikoman is water, then wheat.

Didn't know that about the soy sauce. Thanks.

I agree...I've noticed I feel pretty rough after soy sauce, then I noticed the wheat in the ingredients
There is some all natural soy sauce made by Braggs IIRC that is gluten free.

Sashami is fine with me too, but it would be freaking sweet to roll up a big plate of spicy tuna rolls. I'm going to go to whole foods on Saturday and find some hippy to help me find a good rice substitute.

Tamari makes GF soy as well. Available in the Commissary. You're actually in ground-zero of gluten free in SoCal

Yeah that's true, not hard at all find anything you want gluten free, pizza, burger buns etc...

Except that damn gluten-free bakery in Encinitas my girlfriend dragged me to, in traffic, on a Friday morning (90 minute drive from Mission Valley). Closed 2 weeks for remodeling.
Had a great omelette somewhere near Nytro instead

This and with extreme prejudice

So, one week in and I can definitely see the improvement already. As I said before my diet was already pretty clean but I was eating lots of whole wheat products with my various other carb sources. So essentially I have only changed my diet by eliminating 1/2 cup of oatmeal every morning, whole wheat bread (10 slices a week maybe) and whole wheat tortillias probably about 10 of those a week. I cant tell you how much weight I've lost but it would probably be misleading anyways because I know I've lost some water weight with any fat I would have lost, but my stomach definition has increased significantly and my pants are already significantly looser. Just doing normal pinching I can tell that there is less pinch in areas than normal. I'm going to stick to 100% for another 5 weeks and see just how this turns out and at that point I will re evaluate adding some wheat back into my diet on a much smaller basis than before.
