That's a good angle. Well, because OBVIOUSLY Shakespeare was a RACIST WHITE MAN and it isn't fair that his plays are popular. And when everyone watches his plays, they DESERVE to "see themselves" in the art! Because art isn't about being beautiful! Art is about being able to project yourself into it! orsomereallystupidshitlikethat |

While the left seems to be completely fine with adults romancing children as young as toddlers, having two fifteen year olds romancing (particularly if they're heteronormative and white) is strictly verboten! Moreover, the right is so hyper-sensitized by the degeneracy of the modern west, and its obsession with pedophilia, the idea of 16th century fifteen year olds possibly doing inappropriate things turns them into 16th century Salem puritans, so eager to burn the witch that they can't see straight. Ain't we living in wondrous times? |

In 2015, there was a version of Romeo and Juliet with a black Juliet and an Hispanic Romeo called Romeo and Juliet in Harlem. Movie was made and passed around to schools, but I don't know whether it ever got a full release. In 2016, the Belgians made a movie called Black, where Romeo and Juliet were played by Martha Canga Antonio as Mavela, (their version of Juliet), and Aboubakr Bensaihi as Marwan (their version of Romeo) In 2017, there was a version that touted itself as, "The first Shakespeare feature film adaptation of "Romeo and Juliet" with a complete cast of color that stays true to the language and storyline." In this one, Hernando Caicedo a Columbian actor, played Romeo, while Jasmine Carmichael played black Juliet. West Side Story was redone in 2021, with Ansel Elgort and everybody's favorite, Rachel Zegler, as Tony (Romeo) and Maria (Juliet) respectively. That one, famously, had Spielberg inserting diverse characters into the script, because of COURSE there were multiracial gangs in the New York City of 1957. So, you see, (insert AKSHUALLY meme) Ghetto-Land Story has been done over and over with everybody from Colombians to Arabs, many of them with plenty of blackness front and center. |
