I am trying to find the call sign of a guy who kinda mentored me at an airport in PA in the early 2000.  I'm hoping to be able to take over his call sign (if that's possible.). Regardless I would like to know what his call was.  Is there anyone who can help me?  I would prefer to do it over private message.

Send his name, you can search on QRZ and FCC website by name.

FCC ULS

In the search box select search by name. You may be able to find it there.

If you know the name you can search the old callbooks too.  For those with reused callsigns, you can go through there too and see who had your old call.

I talked to the guy who had mine back in the 70s and 80s. We exchanged cards too.

I may be changing again soon. Waiting on a 2x1 to become available that I want. Then no more changing for me.

I am not having any luck.
Here is his obituary:

Frank the Tank

Can someone give me a hand?

I think that's him. I would I go about getting his call?  Do I need to get my extra first or can I have a four digit?

If this guy has been a SK for nine years, his callsign has probably been issued to another ham.

Its an active callsign right now, someone already got it. Next expiration is 2032.

If it's a 1x2 or 2x1, they are snatched up almost as soon as they become available.

Can you translate that into idiot engineer for me? The call is listed above. I don't see an active user for that call in the FCC website but that website is also the worst website ever made since 2002.

What does 1x2 2x1 mean? I see AARL and the FCC have sites explaining how to get them but what's 1x2 2x1?

number if letters before and after the number, X is the number spot

so a 1x2 example would be K1LL or N0NE or W4IT

a 2x1 would be WA1T or T1TS or WX8A

Both types of call require an Extra Class license.

They searched by name, not call. You have to search by call.

If you want that call, good luck. 1x2 and 2x1 are very desirable by us extra nerds who came along AFTER they ran out. Being the shorter combination there is obviously significantly less available calls than the 1x3 or 2x3 calls. So people usually are waiting at the moment one expires and the 2 years elapses to put in for the call. I'll be doing that towards the end of the year with a call I want. About the only way to jump the line is if it was your call originally or it was a family members call.

Great guy.

You could apply for his previous call sign, N8KSE, as shown on his ULS record. It's currently not assigned and you don't need to be an Extra for a 1x3.

Even more incredible, when I searched on Frank's old call this popped up:

Purchased his card, it will be a great way to remember him! I'll probably frame it.
Thanks

Damn, the guy he talked to is also dead link  That card is before I was born!
