With as many kids as I have and what I earn, Snap On should not logically be something I can afford. Yet here I bask in the glory of American made hand tools. Now how have I achieved this feat of man? Not massive loads of credit card debt, not an inheritance or trust fund, but this one simple hack.

Government Auctions. You see the government is fucking wasteful and when they lose a couple tools out of a box they sell the whole damn thing and buy a brand new one. So where do all these lonely tools go when their friends go missing. To the auction, where we buy them and keep what we need from the box and then sell the leftovers on marketplace and garage journals to pay for the purchase.

Now that I have amassed boxes for myself and the next 3 generations, I feel it is my duty to share the wealth.

So go forth and buy tools.

Or just buy the same tool without the snapon name on it?  There's a mega thread over at the garage journal forum with part numbers that cross reference to get the same tool with a different brand name on it.

Wrenches aside I really don't see the roi on Snap On.  But their wrenches are really nice.

You act like you’ve never heard of government liquidators, Ritchie Bros, or Iron Planet. Not here to hold your hand.

When March Air Base closed and became March Air Reserve Base in Riverside CA the local DRMO had Snap-on tools out the yin-yang by the pallet full.

If you don't mind that your sockets are engraved 822nd and your wrenches with 830th they're pennies on the dollar.

If you live near a DLA Disposition Services (formerly known as the Defense Reutilization and Marketing Service) they are gold mines of computers, tools, and office materials.

Another crazy cheap source is Amazon pallet liquidators. They buy pallets of returns or remains from Amazon and sell the stuff. It's like very clean swap meet stuff.

There is no warranty on those government Snap on tools.
I prefer the Williams wrenches they have a better beam and not like a butter knife.

That link didn't take me to any Snap On tools.

eta- Or maybe it did, IDK, I didn't click on it. I just assume that OP sucks and didn't do his job.

I used to be an auto tech, so I have a fair bit of Snap-On, Matco, and Mac tools in my box. I don't need to buy hand tools much these days, as what I already have is sufficient to keep the cars and mowers and shit running.

Every once in a while I need something, and I have a hard time buying crap made in China. I also can't justify paying $87 for a screwdriver just to fiddle with lawn equipment.

Are you referring to a subforum here on Arf or a different website?

This is relevant to my interests.

Snap on and other similar tools are worth buying if working with them all day. Not because the quality is better but because they do need replacement occasionally.

We abuse and wear them out.  After working all week don't want to spend my Saturday dealing with some 18-year-old cashier arguing with me about a replacement.

When my son was the Lt in charge of the motor pool inventory at Carson he told me about this.  He kept the kits with missing tools in his lock up area and pulled tools from them to complete the kits.  Also started making the mechanics responsible for shit they lost.  Funny how shit quit growing legs.

Not sure about arfcom's rules for posting links to other forums.  I never read the rules, and I'm not about to start now.

Auctions,  market place, garage sales,  pawn shops, forums,  retirement sales.

The vast majority of my tools are snap on. Never had a tab on a tool truck.

Lol - I never had to before, but after more than a decade, I finally got a warning/notice here recently. I had to look at the rules to try to figure out why using the same language CNN used in the linked video was a CoC violation, but it is what it is...

Thanks.

Proto (ASD) has some really kick dick wrenches also.  MAC resells them as the Knuckle Savers.  Right up there with the Flank Drive and FD+.

90% of the Snap On I have came from flea markets, swap meets and garage sales.

Use it until it breaks and trade it in on the truck.

When I was an apprentice, I talked to one of my mentors about this. He was Vietnamese and had a thick accent and slightly broken English, so I hear it in my head this way: "When I start fixing cars, I make no money like five year. Just pay rent - buy tools."
