OK...shameless bump, and I gotta pimp my favorite rescue organization.
There are a bunch of good Malinois out there waiting for a good home, after having a patch of rotten luck. I am pretty darn humbled by the good folks at American Belgian Malinois rescue. It's all volunteer and they get the dogs from all corners of the country, to forever homes anywhere in all 57 states. Malinois rescue If you have room, time, patience, and are looking for a nuclear powered shepherd to keep you in shape, consider a rescue Mal. |

Don't give up. You would be surprised at how clingy, shmoozy, needy, Mals are. If given the opportunity, they can be couch ornaments. 30 Min. non stop hard play/running every day, and they generally will stay mellow. If you have a decent sized back yard, and your throwing arm works, you're in. They aren't Golden retriever Mellow, and always have the explosive energy just under the surface, but aren't "Hyper" at all. They understand quiet time, and snooze/lounge/woobie with the best of 'em. You just wont find the bottom of thier fuel tank if it's play or work time...ever. Part of the process of adoption through ABMR is meeting the pooch if possible. The Foster folks are generally real good judges of the dogs energy levels and personalitys. Keep the door open. |

He's a handsome fellow for sure. This will be our first Anatolian, we had a neurotic Golden Retriever before. We have on average 50 head of sheep at any given time, been losing a number to coyotes and our donkeys haven't been doing anything to quell the attacks and I can't sit outside every night with NV and a rifle. He'll be a working LGD, not a pet in the conventional sense. I have to get our fence repaired & secure before we pick him up. He'll have 10 acres to watch over. Neighbor has an Anatolian, it weighs 188#'s it's sire was the same as this dogs but ours is considerably smaller. Both have the same laid back disposition, polar opposite of the nut case Golden. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Golden but he was like 15 yo. teenager with a fast car on a diet of Redbull, pussy and jumbo Pixie Sticks.

I have a german shorthair and an AS. The pointer is nuts. Anatolians listen very closely to only a select number of people. They are very good guard dogs and should have no problem keeping watch over 10 acres. If you have any questions while training him send me an IM. They will run away if they can and want to. Just an FYI. |

If you have any questions while training him send me an IM. They will run away if they can and want to. Just an FYI. Interesting, my neighbor has a German Wirehaired, an Anatolian, and an Austrailian shepherd. All 3 different temperaments, the only one I don't trust nor can anyone else get close to is the Wirehaired, damn psycho dog. The Anatolian we're getting is 3 years old. Owners were having issues, as you might imagine, with a working dog in a house on a 1/4 acre lot. Breeder took him back, as she will with any of her dogs. She's had him for 2 months or so and has been acclimating him back to farm life, her goats are dropping kids right now and he's been doing real well with them. She brought him over to our place last weekend, we walked him among the sheep, around the donkeys then to the neighbors house and around her Anatolian and new people. He was perfectly well behaved. I'm aware of their tendency to wander, that's why we're working on getting the fencing squared away before bringing him home. He's been chipped. I'd appreciate any training & behavioral modification tips you have to offer and any recommendations on supplies to have on hand. I understand they can have ear problems in warmer weather so I've been looking at ear treatment options, he's already on heart worm preventative and flea treatment. Keeping with the spirit of the thread, another pic. |

My mutt is a dutchy-akita-(maybe pit) mix.
Loving, energetic, smart, loves to please, if I had more $$$ I'd do agility work with her, that's how damn GOOD she is. I let her off leash while I'm in the woods and never have to worry. When we go walking/hiking, she scouts PERFECTLY, and does a damn good job of it too. My akita...he'd run off and go hunting if I took his lead off. Have been considering a pure dutch shepherd after my male akita (pure) passes (he won't tolerate another dog in the family, period....not to mention....I don't need more dogs ATM even though I'd love a puppy...but that's temporary). |

Yup, 'software' is usually a better indication of what a dog has in his genetic makeup than just appearance. A boxer x lab can look just like a pitbull, but sure acts different! |
