How does the National Guard have SF teams?

Were they SF on active duty and mustered out of active service?

19th and 20th

They go through the same pipeline as regular SF dudes, from my understanding, but they're National Guard.

You can be NG and SF, or you can be AD, leave and go NG SF.

Either way, as mentioned before they go through the same pipeline, have the same missions and capabilities, and the same optempo.

That's right. It wasn't much different 7 years later when I went to A-stan.

SPC Joseph Jeffries was a Psyoper assigned to CJSOTF in AFG. Later this month marks the 20th anniversary of his death. Over the years I heard a couple of variations in the story of how he died, and both involved him being attached to an ODA team.

Seeing this video reminded me of him. I miss you brother. See you again one day.

I was in country in 02-03. We were actually fighting a war then.

When I went back in 07 it was all touchy feely and fast food.

That’s some ratted out sewer pipe AKs or really bad ammo to keyhole like that.

Narrator sounded like a young Ewan McGregor at times.

Used to have the 11th and 12th in the USAR as well. Got shut down in the early 90’s.

Incredible. Was that a combat camera billet?

Wonder what that guy's doing now.

Maybe it was different in the NG, but I'd be surprised if they were taking 17 year olds and sending them downrange sans basic and AIT, let alone without a long tab as part of a team. AD 18x contracts for recruits definitely would have required all of those things. Crazier things have happened though, and clearly there was some unique circumstance at play here.

Dude talking about "If we stay long enough, they'll see the good things were doing and they will make the change"

Needs to be saved the next time we get into a country and think we can change them with our good example... So we can remember that and know it does not work.

Yeah I caught that too. All the way through the war there were still massive swaths of the military who thought that if we gave stuff to people they would like us. Wam, bam, problem solved. It's a bit more complicated.

Glad I wasn’t the only one to notice the keyholing.  Worn out rifles or a messed up crown on the muzzle….not the shooter’s fault.

Note the lack of ear protection as well, much less eyewear.  Eeeehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh…..

I'm reading Caravans, by James Michener, which is about Afghanistan. He makes it pretty clear it will never change.

Our enemies foreign & domestic may fear our warriors but they know they can wear down our vote-whore leaders and feminized polity.  In country our generosity & compassion makes us look weak and acquiescing. In the jihadi world only the conquered pay tribute.  A century of occupation & culling might have been enough.  The modern world is too impatient and our media is the greatest weapon against the west.  That doesn’t diminish our warriors dedication, focus, and capabilities so admirable and should be long honored & remembered.  But it certainly is complicated.

In addition to the 19th and 20th (which have already been covered), the Army Reserve also used to have the 11th and 12th SF Groups.  When the Army Reserve got stripped of 98% of its Combat Arms units (the only remaining Reserve combat unit is the 100th/442nd), in the early 90's, the 11th and 12th got deactivated and, AIUI, most of their personnel xferred into the Guard units.
