Looked like the guardrail on the bridge above popped up when he hit it. Surprised the truck and bridge didn't get damaged more than that.

Not good. I hope they shut down the bridge and checked out the beams after that one, but railroads seem to do their own thing.

Often when a bridge gets hit with a glancing blow like that, you'll find the worst damage on the first beam and third beams, but not the second because of the bounce. Looks like the headache bar acted like the first beam, then the actual beam got hit on the bounce.

It's almost always a railroad underpass.

Im thinking the flashing signs saying Over Height Must Detour should be enough. Our the bright yellow bar or the other signs leading up to the intersection. At what point do you want government stepping in to protect people from their own stupidity?

“I didn’t think that the sign flashing “over height must turn” was for ME……”

Likely what everyone says after getting their truck roof peeled off…

Every rental insurance contract I’ve read for these types of trucks specifically exempt roof damage from coverage…..

At the point where a piece of PUBLIC INFRASTRUCTURE is repeatedly taken out of commission because of the fact that it is not built to accepted standards.  Fixing the problem would not be to protect the stupid people that hit it.  It would be to protect the bridge for the sake of all the non-stupid people that use the public road beneath it.

They made the bridge 8 inches higher at the cost of several million $ to raise the tracks up & down the line at other crossings.  It's still one of the greatest physical idiot detectors in the country, AND it shows us stupid people online as well, adding to the global entertainment this bridge provides.

Restore the 11'8" bridge and make it a National Monument.

We did exactly that in KC with a similar low clearance railroad bridge.  Trucks hit the 'warning' device, ripped it off enroute to smash into the bridge.  I think it lasted a few days.  Not weeks, not months, not even a week.  A day or two, and it was gone.

Enact a new "hit the bridge" tax...  $25,000 per incident.
Eventually they'd have enough cash to relocate the rail and/or the sewer line.

We have an underpass like that here in Lansing, MI, double set of rail road tracks and 35 feet from a river, if the trucks aren’t smashing into it, cars drown when the rains turn it into a canal..when I was a teen some dickweed jammed a propane tanker under it, that was sporty for awhile..

12-0 feet.

The bridge doesn't get "taken out of commission" because it has a big ol fucking steel beam protecting it. The only damage is to the trucks, and to my sides from laughing so hard.

Perhaps the idiot drivers who can't manage to not hit it despite the multitude of giant flashing signs telling them not to should be on the hook to cover this expense.

That's why there's a giant beam in front of the bridge.  Most of the time the beam does the peeling and the bridge isn't hit - this time was an exception.  Usually it's just the roofs of box trucks & RV air conditioners - one time it ate an Army CROWS.

They cannot "fix it," because there's a gravity sewer line under the road there that cannot also be lowered without completely redesigning the entire line ($$$$$) and to raise the bridge the railroad grade that crosses it would also have to be redesigned/rebuilt for miles in each direction (even more $$$$$). Their civil engineers did some magic and squeezed 8 inches out from between those restrictions not too long ago, and it has nothing left to give. Now it's up to the retards to stop acting retarded.

There was a train trestle like that one next to the playground where I went to grade school. In 5 years I prolly saw 20 trucks stuck under it. A few happened during recess. I am sure the drivers loved looking up to see ~300 children staring open mouthed at their handy work. The playground fence was about 80 feet from the trestle. Good times.

The trestle with a truck stuck. Recent pic.

Im thinking the flashing signs saying Over Height Must Detour should be enough. Our the bright yellow bar or the other signs leading up to the intersection. At what point do you want government stepping in to protect people from their own stupidity?

The real demonstration of stupidity is spending millions to raise it, and it's STILL to low.

It's only too low for leftists who want the state to protect them from themselves.

Why be a dick?

Because there's a namby pamby leftist in EVERY 11'8" bridge thread that wants to protect idiots from themselves at taxpayer expense.  And here you are.  If you're not a namby pamby leftist, you're acting like one.  Why do you want to protect idiots from the consequences of their actions?

There's one in every bridge thread.  182 videoed accidents, they've never heard of it.  Why don't they raise it?  Why don't they lower it?  Why don't they have 87 signs per mile for 87 miles warning idiots so they don't hit the bridge?  How's about just letting idiots out themselves?

They should've lowered it instead.
Make it blatantly obvious it's too low and make it for passenger vehicles only.

I know that SEEMS like a good idea, but I bet it wouldn't work the way you (and I) think it should.

However in the interest of carnage I'm all for it.

Did he do that on his own, or was he following the instructions of a non truck GPS or phone map app?

Off the top of my head, I'd think flooding would be a concern.

After the destroyed CROWS unit I'd bet the military had something to to with raising the bridge.

No.  That's not how any of this works.

Thought it was a sewer line, so you'd have to build a pump station to lower the road.  That's an expensive shitty job.

Less expensive to allow idiots to keep identifying themselves.

Two types of people in the world.

Those that think the bridge is the problem and intelligent people.

Sadly both are in this thread.

Manufacturers should make shorter trucks.
