So I love to snorkel. The last trip we took to Maui we did 9 snorkel sessions in 6 days. But the fins always tear my feet apart.
The first set of fins I had wore a bad blister on the side of my big toe. The more I kicked the worse it got. Then I got a larger pair of fins and they were sliding around on my feet. I wear a size 12 Wide shoe so that might be an issue. I could always test some fins in a local pool to see if they worked well.
Are you near Denver? Run up to Flatirons Scuba in Broomfield and talk to them, try on some decent fins. They'll get you setup correctly.
But, you are probably right - those socks might help. I know a few people that scuba with socks.
Ludwig Boltzmann, who spent much of his life studying statistical mechanics, died in 1906, by his own hand, Paul Bhranfest, carrying on the work, died similarly in 1933, Now it is our turn to study statistical mechanics...
Have you been using full foot or open heel fins? You need a pair of booties and open heel fins.
"They know what shipwrecks are, for out of sight of land, however inland, they have drowned full many a midnight ship with all its shrieking crew." - Herman Melville, Moby Dick, 1851, on the Great Lakes

NO! Full-foot fins suck for any kind of swimming. Go to a dive shop, buy some dive boots or shoes and a pair of OPEN HEEL fins. A decent shop will be able to fit you with a correct fin for snorkeling.
